F&B Bio Recyclage was honoured to be invited as a featured speaker at the African Civil Aviation Commission AFCAC & EASA- European Union Aviation Safety Agency joint webinar series, “Scaling SAF in Africa: Technology Choices, Regional Supply-Line Resilience and Key Required Action,” held on 12 August 2026. Organized jointly by the African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC) and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA), the session brought together project developers, national aviation authorities, and regional stakeholders to discuss the technology pathways, commercial structuring, and government coordination needed to scale Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) production across the continent.
Frederick Opoku Agyekum, Project Development Director of F&B Bio Recyclage, presented the company’s flagship project — Ghana’s first large-scale Municipal Solid Waste-to-SAF facility — as a first-of-kind case study for the region. His presentation covered:
- The rationale behind selecting gasification and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis as the project’s technology pathway, shaped directly by the availability of municipal solid waste as feedstock
- The practical commercial and structuring challenges of advancing a first-of-kind project from feasibility through to construction-readiness, in a market with no existing reference plant
- The forms of government support that have been most valuable to the project’s progress to date, and what would further accelerate similar first-of-kind developments across West Africa
The presentation followed a scene-setting session from EASA on SAF technology pathways and regional coordination, and preceded case studies from Côte d’Ivoire’s civil aviation authority and a fellow SAF developer from Kenya — together offering a continent-wide view of how SAF projects are progressing from concept to bankability.
“It was a privilege to represent Ghana and share our experience developing a first-of-kind facility of this scale,” said Frederick Opoku Agyekum. “Projects like ours are only possible with the right combination of technology partnerships, disciplined project structuring, and government support — and we’re encouraged by the level of regional coordination AFCAC and EASA are helping to build across the continent.”
Our Ghana project is designed to convert 2,000 tons of municipal solid waste per day into 80,000–90,000 tons annually of ASTM D7566/CORSIA-compliant sustainable aviation fuel, targeting commercial operations in Q4 2031. The project is listed on the ICAO Finvest Hub and is included in Ghana’s Final SAF Business Implementation Study under ICAO’s ACT-SAF Programme.
